Jean Racine's flat in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés

A place of soul, an address of echoes, entrusted to the care of Varenne.

There are addresses that time does not pass through, but which it inhabits.

At 24, rue Visconti, just a stone's throw from the literary murmurings of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a discreet door opens. Behind it, a flat. More than a place: a silent theatre where history continues to breathe.

It was here, in this Parisian retreat bathed in light and shade, that Jean Racine lived, wrote and died in 1699.

And it is here, today, that Varenne invites you to enter into a memory.

At Varenne, the soul of the place is never invisible

It was here, in this Parisian retreat bathed in light and shade, that Jean Racine lived, wrote and died in 1699.

What Varenne is offering here is not just a rare space in Paris. It's a history to be passed on, a breath of fresh air to be preserved. It's not just a piece of property we're offering here. It's a presence. The presence of a man: Racine, and through him, of a century.

Every moulding seems to carry the echo of a line. Every silence, the tension of a drama. Here, tragedies may have been re-enacted in the solitude of an evening. Here, the author may have put down his pen to contemplate eternity.

For we believe that certain places have a memory of their own, and that you have to know how to listen in order to reveal it.

A place for spirit and beauty

130 m² of old-fashioned elegance, warmed by a 35 m² terrace where the light filters through the foliage like a confidence.

Inside, a living room, dining room and kitchen open onto this suspended, almost unreal garden. There are two peaceful bedrooms, two bathrooms and a separate studio, a nod to visiting artists.

All is harmony, seclusion and inspiration. Nothing is demonstrative. Everything is suggestion.

The mystery solved: Racine's house rediscovered

The mystery surrounding Racine's last home hung over Saint-Germain for a long time.

It wasn't until 1914 that an old plan, combined with the rigour of historians, lifted the veil: the poet's house was not 13, 21, but 24. The archives bear witness, and a receipt from the surgeon Mareschal attests to this.

Historical memory finds its stone.

An unbroken thread of creation, because since then, the flat has never ceased to vibrate.

The composer Delapierre gave concerts there, Messiaen taught there, Doisneau and Denise Colomb captured the light there. The painter Jacques Poirier found refuge there.

It's as if the spirit of the place still welcomes those who seek to create.

"What we are selling is more than just a flat: it's a living part of France's heritage. 24, rue Visconti is a rare address, where stone preserves the memory of words".
