The history of the district took a decisive turn in 1838 when Aristide Boucicaut, a former employee of the mail-order company Le Petit Saint-Thomas, bought a modest novelty shop on rue de Sèvres. Accompanied by his wife Marguerite, Aristide transformed this small shop into an innovative department stores', Le Bon Marché. Their revolutionary vision of commerce, based on product quality, fixed prices and a pleasant shopping experience, quickly attracted a wealthy clientele.



With the growing success of Le Bon Marché, the whole district experienced an economic boom. New shops, cafés and theatres opened, attracting a diverse clientele. The arrival of the metro in 1900 with the Sèvres-Babylone station facilitated access to the district, making it even more attractive.
