Palais Royal

Palais Royal
Paris 1e

In the 20th century, the charm of the place attracted writers such as the Austrian Stefan Zweig, who stayed at no. 15 rue de Beaujolais in 1912. Colette moved to no. 9 in 1926. She returned there permanently in 1938, where she wrote most of her work. Jean Cocteau lived with Jean Marais at no. 36, rue de Montpensier, between 1940 and 1947.

At the end of the twentieth century, the garden of the Palais-Royal took on a new dimension with the installation of works of contemporary art. The sculptor Pol Bury created two kinetic fountains reflecting the palace. Michel Goulet has turned garden objects into poetic supports, inviting visitors to daydream with Les Confidents. Finally, Daniel Buren inaugurated his Deux Plateaux in the Cour d'Honneur, with their black and white striped columns. Nicknamed the Buren Columns, they are now one of the symbols of Paris!

Superb, sultry, inspiring: the Palais-Royal was for a long time the beating heart of the capital.

Neighborhood Life

The gardens of the Palais Royal are a jewel of refinement and tranquillity! Adjacent to the Comédie française, on one side are the Buren columns, where children could play for hours, and on the other, the garden planted with perfectly aligned lime trees, refreshing in summer!

But when the sun starts to shine, it's around the pool and its fountain that you should be, sunbathing, reading, chatting and dreaming! All around are splendid galleries where shops vie with each other in ingenuity to represent French luxury.

At the top of the garden, restaurants and cafés serve food all day long, with prominent terraces on the garden side! Around the garden, rue de Richelieu joins the Japanese quarter on the 2nd arrondissement side. A delight for the taste buds and a change of scenery guaranteed!
